Finding by internet something about the “perfectionist”, subject that we were talking last class, I’ve found an interesting article about a new illness that its name is “Ortorexia”, the obsession to eat healthy food. While the problem of the anorexia and bulimia is about the quantity that you eat, the problem of Ortorexia is about the quality of the food. It’s an obsession to eat only biological healthy food. The people who are victims of this illness suffer a hard worry about the healthy food every time; it’s the one objective in their life. These kinds of people try to get different physical, psychical and moral benefits, which it makes them hooked on it, as a drug addict.
These people only eat food that it comes from ecological agriculture but vegetables without pesticide or artificial substance. Most of them give up eat basically groups of foods (for example meat, greases, fish) falling in a dietetic disorder or malnutrition because they don’t replace these kinds of proteins for others.
Generally this illness appears among excessive perfectionist people, people who are obsessive in rules. It appears among people who have suffered anorexia too.

There are famous people who are different habits in theirs nutrition, a correct habit if it will not became in obsession. For example, the designer Jean Paul Gaultier admits that he drinks 68 orange juices every day. Julia Roberts explain that she drinks some litres of Soya milk every day. Wynona Ride only drinks organic Coca cola and Mel Gibson doesn’t eat chicken because he thinks that it increase the breasts.

Although there aren’t a lot of studies about it, there are some diagnoses about it:
- To spend more than three hours a day thinking in a healthy food
- To feel bad every time that you don’t keep the diet
- To worry more for the quality of the foods than to enjoy eating them
- Excessive planning that you have to eat next day
- Social isolation
- To prefer don’t eat anything than eat something prohibited
Nowadays, in Spain, there aren’t a lot of cases about it, but the specialists ensure that the number of people will increase in a few time.

Interesting post! I didn´t know about the word “Ortorexia”, and I must recognize that I know some people who probably have this illness. From my point of view, I have always thought that extremes are not good so probably moderation is the answer. I know some people obsessed on biological healthy food and, as you say, most of them have not the correct information about nutrition so they don´t get some vitamines or proteines which are necessary for the body. I don´t know, in fact I prefer not to think where the food I eat everyday comes from. People who eat, for example, tomatoes from ecological agriculture think those tomatoes are better than others which you can buy on a fruit shop. My sister in law works on a fruit shop and I have seen “non-ecological” peaches sold in her shop and the same peaches sold on a ecological shop (but, of course, at a different price). Moreover, probably some of those vegetables have grown with no pesticides, but, do people know what kind of water was used to irrigate them?, do people know about the quality of the land were they grew up?. It is curious that living on a contaminate world, as we live, sorrounded by mobile radiation and other kind of radiations, some people think that eating ecological food will let live them two days more than me!

I think ecological food is another example of the moral duality of people. As ladybird said, people are worried by methods used to grow plants and animals because many of them are "anti-ethical" but they don't have any problem to take the car instead public transport, to smoke 20 cigarrettes daily, to maintain switched on the heater or air conditioned all day, to take a bath instead to take a shower and other things which damage the planet and our health much more than non-ecological food which has to pass a stricted quality control before to be sold.

furthermore, using some non-ecological methods is the only way to everybody could eat the food that they want independently the season.
